The town of Manacor can be traced back farther than much of the island, with humans appearing to have been inhabiting the area since around 2000 BC. In more recent times it was occupied by the Romans before it became home to the Moors.
Manacor’s modern history starts around 1200, when it was first granted a municipality. The site of the parish church, Nostra Senyora dels Dolors, has been home to many churches. The earliest church dates back to 1232 and was probably the first church here after the Arab occupation.
The year 1879 saw the opening of the railroad between Manacor and Inca. Just 18 years after this the world famous pearl manufacturer, Majorica, was founded. The success helped Manacor to establish itself as a major player on Mallorca. In 1912 as the population grew Manacor was officially upgraded to a town.
If you want to spend a different day on your vacation you can take a nice walk on the greenway of Manacor. You will arrive with your bike to the eastern part of the town. In front there is a large avenue that will take you to the beginning of the traditional market. Every Monday throughout the year you can enjoy the walk and your shopping. There are many bars and restaurants where you can have a drink.
We recommend you rent a mountain bike either normal or electric bike. With a trekking bicycle you will also enjoy the greenway since the terrain is flat and in good condition for cycling.
