Punta de n'Amer Castle
During the 16th century, the need for guarded coastlines arose, as pirates from northern Africa and the kingdom of Ottoman continuously attacked Mallorca. However, the final decision of erecting this fortress was not made until a violent attack happened in 1611 which caused severe damage to the east cost. The construction of the fortress began 1693, due to economic decline in Manacor in this period, and was finished in 1696.
The fotress rises 35 metres above sea surface. During service time, the fortress was guarded by 2-3 guards, armed with sables, muskets and pistols. Moreover, the tower was equipped with a canon on the platform which could shoot at hostile ships entering the bays of Cala Millor and Sa Coma. The original canon is still here by the way.
In contrast to most other defense towers around the coastlines of Mallorca, Castell de sa Punta de n’Amer is shaped in a square building construction. The notches in the facades, prevented enemies from climbing to the platform, if they managed to cross the moat.
During the 19th century, the amount of attacks on Mallorca declined due to a more civilized Mediterranean region. However, the fortress was put in service again during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), where it served as a communications posts for the nationalists. Next to the fortress, barracks was built for the professional soldiers to have a place to rest and eat during wartime. Today, these former barracks serve as a restaurant/cafeteria from where you can take in the amazing views over Cala millor while enjoying a refreshment.
Inside the castell de sa Punta de n’Amer, there is a small exhibition hall, showcasing some of the original weapons and artifacts used in the fortress.
